The UEL, as one of the many interested stakeholders non-profit public interest groups, attended a “stakeholders” meeting. We were encouraged that at last there would be a public process for Virginia Key. Unfortunately, with the previous City of Miami manager, there was a closed door policy. Various public developments, including Virginia Key and Bicentennial Park were being designed by consultants without public input. Successful cities thrive when there is a shared trust between the city officials and the citizens.

In 2006 we hosted candidate’s forums for the 2006 County Commission elections and City of Miami Commission elections. We held four successful dinner programs at the historic Miami River Inn, held a Strong Mayor Charter Change Debate and sponsored an Urban Smart Growth themed bus tour to Delray Beach. UEL has still not resolved is the lack of open public participation for the Bicentennial Park and Virginia Key master plans.  read more »

Welcome to another new, good year for the Urban Environment League. The UEL summer ended after a very productive series of County Commission Candidate Forums. UEL committees have finalized a fan- tastic Dinner Series at the Miami River Inn, and a set of Smart Growth Bus Tours, the first on November 17 to Delray Beach, and a second on March 23 to ABACOA in Palm Beach County.

UEL was founded ten years ago. To celebrate, we are updating our history of activism. It is enlightening to examine the League’s glowing record. UEL was on the early cusp, creating awareness on issues that continue to be major community concerns. Most astounding is that some of the most troublesome issues of UEL’s past agendas are just beginning to surface in government as critical matters. We question whether this is indicative of prevailing lethargy in government leadership, or just a lack of grand vision for Miami Dade County.  read more »

As this is the beginning of my fourth year as President of UEL, I thought I would reflect on the ques- tions posed in the title. When I started with the UEL, the issues were about saving open space, establishing benchmarks for quality communities, insuring that Miami would develop a land use master plan to preserve the character of the city’s historic neighborhoods and parks...

The Urban Environment League has spent much of the past few months involved with activities to support The Hold the Line Cam- paign. The Campaign is composed of a group of grass roots people who care about the future of Miami Dade County, including neighborhood organizations, not-for- profit groups, affordable housing groups, individuals who want a livable community and municipalities who understand the threat to their citizens if the line is moved...

History was made on December  21.  I have lived in Miami since 1959,  and “shame on me”, I have never  been to the Everglades.  I lived on  the edge of the Glades when, in  1960, the edge was just west of my  home on SW 87th Avenue and Bird  Road.  It was really the edge and my  three children were born there.  I have been in the expanded edge  while visiting Weston.  I have driven  past the Glades on Alligator Alley.  I  have watched the evolution of the  Everglades from the air as little red  rooftops sprawl endlessly westward  and human growth dangerously in-  read more »

It always seemed that the greedy developers, corrupt officials, gridlock traffic, poor public transportation, deteriorated public places and lack of open space caused a poor quality of life in this community. But, none of the above compared to the havoc and hardship caused by the threat of four hurricanes. How lucky we were! The weather certainly put our problems in perspective. I hope each of you had a great summer and that you are ready to get back to work as community watch- dogs working together to better our community...  read more »

A Message from Nancy Liebman: President of the UEL

The UEL is mid-way through a productive year. Our dinner/discussion programs at the Miami River Inn have been well-attended, with Sallye Jude’s delicious, down-home cooking and provocative discussion, including topics on billboards, water quality, preservation of public lands and parks, and the use of the County’s transit tax bond.  read more »
