Program Focus:

Only a few decades after gaining the vote and living within small though vibrant and segregated communities, people of African heritage in Miami-Dade have grown into a far more complex political world. Issues of poverty and equality are fused with controversies about incorporation, campaign contributions, and fragmented representation between immigrants and the native born. These and other issues will be addressed by the Honorable Shirley Gibson, a graduate of St Thomas University who is the first and current mayor of the City of Miami Gardens, the third largest in Miami Dade County, containing a population of 105,000 people, 79% of whom are of African heritage. She will be joined by Dr. Chanelle Rose, who recently received her PhD in history and has written the most comprehensive history of the civil rights movement in Miami.

Reception 7:00pm - 7:30pm, Program 7:30-9:00. In the Evelyn & George Goldbloom Convocation Hall in the St. Thomas University Library (16401 NW 37th Ave. Miami Gardens Fl. 33054). Free and open to the public.
